Unlike acetylene, propane cannot be used for gas welding because it does not have the properties to create a reduction zone that cleans the metal surface. Acetylene achieves a higher combustion temperature and provides a better quality cut than propane.

What is oxygen fuel welding?

Both oxygen and fuel gas are utilized to heat the metal being cut. The "jet" of oxygen is then passed through the center, whereby oxygen and fuel gas on both sides heat the metal. The combination causes a reaction through the center to form "slag". The oxygen jet forces the slag downward by cutting the metal to the desired location.

Make sure that the oxygen and fuel gas are heated below the melting point to prevent the metal from melting before cutting. The melting point must be lower than the surrounding metal in order for the slag jet to be forced through the metal.
